In November 2025, Terrain, The Nature Conservancy and the Wet Tropics Restoration Alliance hosted a workshop at JCU’s Cairns Institute that explored a range of environmental markets applicable in the Wet Tropics region These markets are still new and emerging, but the potential opportunities for landholders in this region are huge, particularly if multiple schemes can be stacked.
The aim of environmental markets is to assign a financial value to natural assets, enabling landowners to earn income for protecting, restoring or managing ecosystems, thus addressing a range of environmental challenges. The hope is that environmental markets can help overcome some barriers to restoration, such as chronic funding shortages.
